Phishing vs. Spear Phishing

Not All Scams Are Created Equal

Standard Phishing is like casting a wide net in the ocean. Target: Millions of people at once. Tactic: Generic emails like "Dear Customer" or "Netflix Payment Failed." Goal: Hope that 1 out of 1000 clicks the link.

This is personal. The attacker isn't fishing; they are hunting YOU. Target: Specific individuals. Tactic: They use your real name, job title, and reference your recent projects. Danger: Harder to detect because it looks legitimate.

Spear Phishing

Spear phishing targeting the "Big Fish"—CEOs and Executives. The Lure: Fake lawsuits, urgent board meeting links, or tax subpoenas. The Stakes: High value. One click can compromise the entire company.

Generic Greeting? It's Phishing. Personal details but urgent request? It's Spear Phishing. Rule: When in doubt, verify offline.
